New Age Group Alignment

U.S. Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and the Association Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) collectively announced a major update to age group formation that will take effect beginning with the 2026–27 seasonal year. This change moves away from the current calendar-year (January–December) model and returns to a seasonal-year (August–July) model for age grouping. As we prepare for the upcoming 2026–2027 season, BUFC will be aligning our age group structure with the national shift from a calendar-year birth model to a seasonal, school-year model.

This change is taking place across youth soccer nationwide and will impact clubs throughout the country.

We understand that structural adjustments can bring questions, and we want our families to know that every decision is being made thoughtfully — with player development, stability, and long-term growth at the center.

Our focus remains unchanged:

Providing a consistent, competitive, and supportive environment where players continue to grow with confidence.

We appreciate your continued trust as we move forward together into the 2026–2027 season.

Beginning with the 2026–2027 season in August 2026, youth soccer will shift from the current calendar-year (January-December) model to a seasonal-year (August-July) age grouping structure.

Current Structure: Birth year (January 1 – December 31)

New Structure: Seasonal year (August 1 – July 31). This aligns age groups with the school year, placing players with their school-grade peers

U.S. Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO agreed to this change based on extensive research and feedback. The key reasons include:

  • Stronger alignment with school-grade peers, supporting both social connection and developmental growth.
  • Increased inclusivity and participation opportunities.
  • Unified approach across major youth soccer organizations.
  • Expert recommendations supporting the school-year model.
