Sentongo, MD.<\/a>\u00a0While younger kids who compete in shorter games might not need to pay as much attention to their game-time nutrition, older kids who are serious about their performance should follow these nutrition rules to maximize their athletic abilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to be at the top of your game, you need good hydration, a meal of complex carbohydrates the day before and a high-protein diet after,\u201d Sentongo said. \u201cIf you follow those rules, your performance will be better than someone who eats too many sugary and fatty foods.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-content-tb fusion-content-tb-1 ue-post__content\">\n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1-1 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\">\n<div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\">\n<div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\">\n<div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\">\n<div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"28\" data-lineheight=\"36.4px\"><strong>Night Before the Game: Carb-load and Avoid New Foods<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Starchy nutrition foods like pasta, rice and potatoes offer a carbohydrate-rich meal that will provide the right fuel for the next day\u2019s event. Sentongo recommends avoiding new foods that might upset your stomach during the game.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"28\" data-lineheight=\"36.4px\"><strong>Before the Game: Stay Hydrated and Don\u2019t Eat Fats<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Young athletes can stay hydrated by using this easy equation: take their weight (100 lbs.), divide it in half (50 lbs.) and turn that number into ounces (50 oz). That\u2019s how much water they should drink each day. Staying hydrated is especially important the day of the game. \u201cThat will help prevent cramps and fatigue,\u201d Sentongo said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cIf you want to be at the top of your game, you need good hydration, a meal of complex carbohydrates the day before and a high-protein diet after\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you need to pack a snack for your child to eat before an after-school game or practice, Sentongo recommends something starchy like crackers, bread or a banana. Anything too fatty, like junk food or milk, is digested slowly and will make athletes feel slow and sluggish. Athletes should also avoid eating too many high-fiber foods, like beans, fruits and vegetables, which are also difficult to digest and can cause stomach problems on the field.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"28\" data-lineheight=\"36.4px\"><strong>During the Game: Nutrition is Important \u2013 Refuel as Needed<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Some parents are encouraged to bring snacks for the kids to eat mid-game. While parents often pack sugary treats like granola bars, Sentongo recommends the same starchy foods kids should eat before the game. \u201cAnything too sweet will be rapidly absorbed and expended, and they won\u2019t benefit from it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>While on the sidelines, athletes should drink both water and sports drinks like Gatorade that have electrolytes and potassium to help them recover. Though some athletes are getting creative with hydration options. Pickle juice has grown in popularity in recent years. Sentongo recommends sticking with sports drinks. These have the right combination of salt and sugar that increases absorption of electrolytes in the body.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"28\" data-lineheight=\"36.4px\"><strong>Post-game: Repair with Protein<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After the game, athletes should eat a high-protein meal that contains poultry, meats, fish or legumes. \u201cWhen you compete, you break down muscle. The protein helps repair it,\u201d Sentongo said.<\/p>\n<p>Though athletes may feel fatigued, Sentongo cautions against overhydrating, which can cause light-headedness and even more fatigue.
